That’s right. Nowadays, everything has to be pumpkin spiced!
So we figured, why not share a little post about the beauty of fall?
Every autumn in the New England states, October brought with it chilly weather, pumpkins, apple picking and spectacular fall foliage.
It brought with it hot mulled apple cider, keeping your hands warm on a crisp day, the first day you pull out your gloves and can see your breath mist.
October brought with it a sense of warmth and harvest and sweetness.
I enjoy my swampy Houston home, but man, there are times when I truly miss the spectacle of autumn.
Jessi and I grew up in the frigid north, and she, too, has that irreplaceable sense of nostalgia for all things fall when she pines for Ohio.
Fall Foliage: Hiking in Colorado
Boulder County has tons of really great hiking paths, and in the fall, the wooden paths and mountain trails are constantly beckoning.
Fall Foliage: School-time Activities
For me, September and October bring strong memories of school buses and new backpacks. Or, in the case of the pictures below, my time spent in graduate school in Boulder, Colorado. By then, I’d traded my school bus for a Toyota, and my backpack for a computer bag and piles of academic papers.
Can you just feel the mountain breeze in these pictures?
For one of my graduate classes in zoology and field studies, I got to hang out in the Colorado wilderness and make a survey of the number of bird species I could count. It was a great excuse to get outside in the fresh Colorado mornings, sitting by the many ponds and open space land in the Boulder area to count avian fauna. Talk about experiential education!
Plus, it was really stunningly pretty!
The sunlight! The stark red leaves! Cue the angelic chorus!
Back in the sunny Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts, fall kind of explodes with color, and leaf-peepers come from all around to bask in the rainbow.
I also spent my book-learning years here, at the University of Massachusetts. Good old school memories, walking the old campus lawns.
The Great Pumpkin
Finally, I can’t have a post about pumpkin spice without…no, not Starbucks…but a pumpkin.
Albeit, Boston style. This is how crazy my hometown gets about the Boston Red Sox.
You might say we’re out of our…gourds?
Got any good stories about Autumn-slash-Fall? What’s it like in the Southern Hemisphere? Is the changing of the leaves a big deal where you live? We’d love to hear from you!
